Starbase 109: The Phoenix

"We have powerful tools: Openness, optimism and the spirit of curiosity." -Jean-Luc Picard

Welcome to Starbase 109! We are a "Star Trek" play-by-Nova RPG sim with a legacy covering over a decade! Starbase 109 is part of Theta Fleet's “Area 51” task force.

Our sim takes place within the decade prior to the events in the first season of “Star Trek: Picard.” SB109 lies out on the edge of Federation space, isolated far from the more “lawful” parts of the Alpha Quadrant. As a Federation starbase, we must uphold Federation law. But that can be tricky when you're located in a place rife with social instability. Sometimes we must take matters into our own hands, even if that means bending the rules... something the station's inhabitants know all-too-well!

We're looking for bright minds to come aboard and create fantastic stories within the “Star Trek” universe! We are a sim that honors Gene Roddenberry's original vision of hope, aspiration, and progression of the human spirit!

Our sim is rated PG-13 and is open to ages 18 and higher. We do not condone writing of torture or excessive violence, harsh profanity, or graphic sexuality. We encourage compelling plots with a diverse cast of characters, containing the action and drama befitting the “Trek” universe on a Starbase with endless amounts of possibilities!

Above all, inclusion and activity between our crew is our first priority. Primary characters must take on roles vital to a Federation starbase. Every player is urged to interact with others. There are primary missions going on at all times, and characters will be required to perform their designated jobs. Stories with NPC characters are always welcome too! Feel free to write and create as much as you like! If you are new to online simming, we welcome you with open arms! We hope we can make your first steps into our community easy and enjoyable!

Before we accept your application, the Commanding Officer will contact you to start a "Sample Joint Post." This is meant to determine the quality of writing, your interaction with others, and how well you are able to write your character. It is not an official post.

Interested in joining? Make it so!

Commanding Officer, Starbase 109

Legacy Award
In the memory of Susan Nixon. She was a mother figure to all who came aboard. She cared about every player and every character, and was our CO for almost the entirety of Starbase 109's twelve years. Her departure greatly saddens us all. Starbase 109, her legacy to us, will continue with her in all our hearts. Her contributions to the simming community and her ability to mentor writers on her sims has been invaluable and greatly appreciated.

» Captain Francis Retirement (Within the Sim)

Posted on Mon 1st Jun, 2026 @ 1:17pm by Captain Gordon Francis in Sim Announcement

Hi all! CF here. I hope everyone is having fun developing the new station as well as its diverse and fascinating cast of characters. I have some significant news that will be announced soon within our story. I wanted to say it here first.

Captain Francis is going to retire.

To be clear, I am not stepping down from SB109. In the story, Captain Francis will step down and command of the station will go to Mindo. It's a big change and I've wanted to do it for a while. Some of you are already aware of Mindo and the…

Good times!

Wishing a Happy Easter and/or Spring Equinox to all who celebrate it!

To anyone lurking out there who hasn't checked in on us in a while--we just blew up the starbase! Not completely; it's still mostly intact, but a good chunk of it is missing--and you know what that means: repairs and remodeling. It's a scary way to get an upgrade, but hey, it works.

We are about to write the return of its residents to Starbase 109. If you have thought this looked like a cool sim in the past and thought it might be nice to join someday--now's…

Re-sending this in case anyone didn't get it before. If you did, I made a few edits but nothing new...

Folks, I can't tell you how grateful I am for everyone's involvement during the most recent arc as we go out with a bang. The entire crew has risen to the occasion and that means so much to me as your Captain. I hope everyone is happy and having fun. Please allow a few minutes while I say a few things...

Keeping everyone happy is the main part of my role as CO. So, I believe we'd all be happier…

Mission: [MAIN] Learning to Fly
Posted on Fri 3rd Jul, 2026 @ 3:33am by Magnus Temple

Inspired by “A Shanty for a Brute”, created by CF and performed by Qaraq.

ON:

There weren’t many words being spoken as the trio of Magnus Temple, Genevieve Gillard, and Ashra quietly strolled onto the S.S. Versailles, the diplomatic team feeling a little tender after their night visiting on the Broot home-world. What had been intended to be a serious discussion about the future of Starbase 109, and the security of the Delavi Expanse, had soon turned into what their host gleefully described as a “song and a scrap”. Plus, drinking. Quite a lot of drinking, actually. So much so…

ON

Being a Federation diplomat meant often interacting with people whose lives and views differed from those of Earth. Sometimes it was big, sweeping differences of culture, language, and beliefs. Other times it was small differences, where values and ideas could almost meet except for something categorically diverse. Magnus was used to this, trained to respect the different when he came across it, while still upholding his own values and those of the Federation.

He always found it tricky, however, when it came to capitalist economics, those who pursued the excess of wealth by collecting pieces of metal or digital…

You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make. --Jane Goodall

ON:

In the outer rim of the Delavi sector, there was an auspicious region of space called the “Horizon Cloud”, an ethereal nebula of micro-silicates that when reflected by the light of a nearby white dwarf star, created a phenomenon as if the surrounding space was blanketed in a pillowy, wispy fog of shimmering lights. It was beautiful. And while this view brought…

Mission: [MAIN] Learning to Fly

Exhaustion hammered on Makila, in a manner that she'd never before felt. Every step made her ache to take it, and she wished for nothing more fervently than to be taken from this place to rest. Rest seemed like a fevered dream at the moment, and the idea that she might sleep was something of a joke that wasn't truly funny. Her exhausted mind still flew in a million directions at once, but lingering in the depths of her soul was a wrenching fear for how this would affect everything moving forward.

Kellian Michaels entered Sickbay with a fragrant nosegay…

Mission: [MAIN] Learning to Fly
Posted on Mon 29th Jun, 2026 @ 11:54pm by Lieutenant JG Kellian Michaels

Andrew Michaels paced the length of his cabin aboard the TS Tempest, dictating a letter. He had never been the sort of man who truly liked sitting behind a desk all day, and when his work afforded him the privacy to move about a room, he did. He was a tall, lean human with grey eyes and dark hair cut into a conservative businessman's style. His clothing, though, was business casual. No need to wear a suit and tie onboard a transport ship.

He had already put away the majority of his clothing, except for a small overnight bag that…

"Well, the plan went off without a hitch. I came out with a brain bleed, broken patella and fractured ribs. The security personnel had similar injuries but, I dare say, the whole charade was a success. Damion bested us and escaped, disguised as Anslo Tol. Those two elite Trill trackers, Ryzhkyn and Rautha were...well they were pissed beyond imagination.

I told them I had denied Anslo his request for asylum. Showed them my denial myself. I explained how I was escorting Anslo to the civilian brig closer to them so, once their ship was repaired, they could take him and…

This log entry will self-destruct five seconds after I finish writing it.

Well, I made it onboard the Sherpa. I hate to think of the three injured people I left behind in that corridor. Unlike Scottish organized crime bosses and their lieutenants, they did nothing to deserve the pain I dished out to them. Well, maybe Cmdr. Rex did, but I'm not going there.

At least they all gave as good as they got. If I hadn't been portraying someone frantic with terror, I wouldn't have pressed them so hard or dislocated that one guy's shoulder. I suspect I did…

Life aboard the Transport Ship Sherpa

I can't believe I actually got onboard this ship. Most ships, you show up with no luggage, you get looked at funny and questioned. Not here--not by the crew, anyway. Some of the other passengers are suspicious, and no wonder. I have bruises on my bruises. I ache in parts of my body I didn't know existed, and my entire right side is sore. Those security guards and the Trill commander put up a hard fight. Right now, I just feel lucky to be alive and thankful to be here and not in the…

I need to do some thinking.

I was walking through the Promenade this evening because I'd bought some new seeds for my hydroponics garden, and this godawful song started playing over the PA system. It was an old Earth song, very peppy and upbeat, and I wasn't really in the mood--but then the lyrics hit me: I just want to be your everything. And it got me thinking about Elizabeth.

Big surprise there. What doesn't get me thinking about Elizabeth, these days?

But the really prominent thought in my mind was, You shouldn't be my everything. I miss you so…

» Musings on the Theme from 'Patton'

Posted on Sat 19th Oct, 2024 @ 5:46pm by Lieutenant JG Kellian Michaels

This evening, when I got home from work, I made supper and decided to watch an old Earth movie called Patton. It's about a United States Army general named George Patton, who was known for being rather flamboyant, exhilarated by combat, and intolerant of what he perceived as weakness in others. Most interestingly to me, he remembered past lives in which he had served in historical military forces. He could stand on a historical battlefield and describe exactly some battle he had fought in because he was seeing it as he remembered it happening. I suspect people at the time…
