[MAIN] Learning to Fly
Location: Security Office
Timeline: Current
Pifanyi stepped off the turbolift. She had been aboard the starbase long enough to drop her belongings in her billets, retrieve her PADD and set out for in-procesing. The billets were not quarters for permanent residents. Pifanyi could only surmise that she was not going to be assigned to the starbase itself. Her orders were to report to Starbase 109 for Medical assignment. And since 109 appeared to have a full medical team, she could only ponder at her real assignment.
'Something secret maybe,' she thought. Such a result would actually prove beneficial to her.
Stepping away from the turbolift, she set out toward the Security Office area. Always the first stop in in-processing was Security. She needed her clearance and Starfleet profile synched before she could do anything else.
This starbase looked new. Not simply having been upkept as all Starfleet vessels and establishments were meant to be. No, this place looked new; new new. There were terminal in the corridors with clear plastic protectors still on the screens. And this place smelled that new new smell.
She found her way to the Security office area and entered. She inquired about meeting with the Security Chief and was pointed to his office. She noted the direction to the brig and other offices before stepping upon the office of "Gabriel Barron," she read the nameplate beside the door. She pressed the chime letting him know someone had come calling at his door.
Gabe was in his office. He had just finished unpacking and placing his personal effects around the office. He was currently standing in front of the nook that housed items from his time in the marine corps. A moderately sized shadowbox made of tastefully lacquered oak housed his Gunnery Sargent's strips and the medals he had earned while in the green during the war. When the door chimed he tuned and answered with his typical soft baritone voice.
"Enter." Barron called out as he faced the door.
The door slid open invitingly and Pifanyi stood surprise for only a second before stepping into the office. She had reviewed the roster for 109 and saw that Gabriel Barron was a recent addition to the crew. The roster had not included images nor had she gone further in and look at Starfleet service profiles. All in all, she did not know, beforehand, that Barron was Klingon and would have never attributed his name to a Klingon. There was a story there and maybe Pifanyi would hear about it in time.
"Greetings Commander," she said fully inside the office. I am Lieutenant Pifanyi, recent graduate of the Academy, here for the Security portion of my in-processing."
Barron nodded and smiled. "Well howdy there Lieutenant. Welcome to starbase 109. You said you were here for your security on boarding?" Gabe moved behind his desk and motioned for the officer to take a seat opposite. But before he sat Gabe looked up at Pifanyi.
"Ah where are my manners? Momma would transport in and give me a wollop if she knew I forgot to offer you a beverage. Would you like some refreshments before we get started?" Gabe said with a good natured chuckle.
In all of her medical studies, Pifanyi did focus a lot on failed medical experiments in an attempt to try and discover what went wrong and where and to see if said experiments could, in fact, be accomplished. She could not help but to think that, based on how Gabriel was coming off, if he was the product of some failed, or accomplished experiment. Whatever his story, he was a Starfleet officer and that was all Pifanyi needed. "Hermav mineral water, Sir," she said. Baffled by a very un-Klingon display by a Klingon, Pifanyi lowered herself into the offer chair and looked around. The place looked about as new as the starbase, as though he had just moved in himself.
Gabe nodded as he moved to the replicator. "Computer, Hermav mineral water, appropriate temperature for Lieutenant Itzyana's tastes. As well as an ice cold sweet tea." The beverages appeared and Gabe picked them up and moved them to the desk. Offering the water to the officer across from him and taking a warriors sized gulp from the tea as he sat.
Pifanyi drank from her water. Hermat were generally a hermetic race, keeping to themselves and/or appearing withdrawn in mixed company. She felt especially withdrawn before this Klingon acting anything but that.
"Now where were we?" Barron continued. "Ah yes your on-boarding. Give me just a moment while I pull up your records and authorize you in the system." Barron picked up a PADD, accessed the information he needed and after a few moments nodded to himself. "It does appear everything is in order. Computer, Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Barron, Chief of Security authorizing security access to Star Base 109 and accompanying vessels attached there to Lieutenant Pifanyi Itzyana in her assigned position." There was a soft chime as the computer accepted the order and listed the Lieutenant on the roster.
Gabe smiles warmly "There ya' go Lieutenant you are all set." He sipped his tea that he had not put down yet "Just out of the Academy did I hear you mention?"
"You did, sir," she said. "Starfleet Medical. My orders are to report here, Starbase 109, but make no mention that I am actually assigned here. You, would not know what my actual assignment is...do you...sir?"
Gabe wrinkled his brow before shaking his head. "Alas Lieutenant no, that I do not. That would be a conversation for the Captain not a lowly section chief. I myself are new to the station. Got aboard a few days ago and just barely got situated. So im sure there are things that I haven't learned about yet."
"My billets are in transient for the moment. So, I am not sure if they have anything for me or if I am to be station on a ship." She gave up trying to figure that part out. "Being new here...it looks like we will be learning the station and the people together then. And...sir...if you don't mind the correction...it is just Pifanyi, or Lieutenant Pifanyi. There is no need for the 'Itzyana.' That is just a number; not a name."
"Ah apologies I wasn't aware I thought it was a surname. Of course Lieutenant I'll endeavor to remember that." Gabe said as he sipped his tea.
"So tell me as someone who is not human how do you find star fleet?" Barron asked jovialy.
Pifanyi paused a moment to better formulate her answer. Socializing was not really her thing and casual conversation was..."Challenging," she said. Though Hermav is a Federation planet, we Hermat are a bit sparse among the ranks. The Academy and the work I do is no issue. It's...people. I guess I am not much of a people person." And she dwelled shortly on the paradox that she studied medical and, thus, made a profession of dealing with people.
Gabe raised an eyebrow. "Hmmm, should I contemplate on your choice of profession given your self admitted lack of people skills?"
Pifanyi did not want anyone to contemplate on her choice of profession. She wanted no one, especially Security, to have the slightest hint at what was churning away in her simulations. It was the single reason why she had a personal PADD that she kept unsynched from the main Computer.
"In my experience," she said, "Doctors do not require people skills. Just the skills to keep people alive and well." She shrugged. "Beside manner does help though." Before he could say anything else, "What about you, sir...if you don't mind me asking. How do you find Starfleet?"
He laughed "I found Star Fleet after leaving the Marines after the war. I studies to be a Doctor at George Washington University before the war. When war broke out I enlisted in the marines as a Medic. The war ended and all the death, pain and suffering it made me less... willing to go back to University. I drifted for a few months and ended up outside a Star Fleet recruiting center and was in the Academy a couple weeks later." He stopped and sipped his tea this time just a little more melancholy than before.
This surprised Pifanyi. She was caught unawares at the manner of Klingon 109's Chief of Security was, and now, a Klingon who studied to be, "A doctor? It seems...in a pinch...you may be able to make an arrest while also saving lives," she said.
He nodded "Yes, that has happened on occasion. One reason I always keep a small med pack on me just in case." Barron said after taking a sip of the tea."
"Well," Pifanyi decided to admit, "I find it helpful to keep a pair of manacles on me." She did not want to get into the exact reason why. "Never know when you bring someone back if they want to fight."
Barron snorted and nodded "I knew a few EMTs on Earth that did the same..." he pauses for but a moment "And other reasons to utilize the 'soft' restraints." Then he laughed softly at a memory.
Pifanyi was reliving a memory as well, but not one to laugh at. She smiled smally and waited for him to reach the end of his laughter. "If there is nothing else, sir. I should continue my in-processing."
He nodded "By all means Lieutenant Ive already taken up to much of your valuable time. If you have need of my services my door is always open. Don't be a stranger now." And he flashed her finger guns as he stood.
